Children in first

This blog comes to you delayed live but not from the BBC television centre in London.

So dig deep people, it's time for another years Children in Need, the glorified, seven hour pop concert presented by Terry Wogan with whatever token blonde the BBC keeps in tow. Another fantastic line up this year, with several pop groups all performing kid friendly songs, and the casts of various soaps doing the same.

I said that before I looked at the actual line up this year, and was entirely unsurprised to learn I was correct in my assumptions that it was really not much more than extension of various reality TV shows, and a glorified song and dance show. Sure, there's a preview trailer of the new Doctor Who Christmas special, but I fai-

... wait, what?

As written on the BBC website "A must-see will be the exclusive screening of the opening moments of this year's special Christmas episode of Doctor Who. David Tennant and David Morrissey star in the intriguingly titled The Next Doctor."

Yes that's right, the show is now so desperate for attractions (or maybe Doctor Who is now so undeniably popular), that a trailer for the episode that won't be shown for another seven weeks is considered a highlight even moreso than the cast of The Bill's song and dance number.

This is the same show that, last year, managed to create an entirely new short special for Children in Need, can now only put out a trailer for something that will be shown later in the year. I know David Tennant is busy nowadays, but what was the point of just sticking up a trailer rather than something entirely new?

But yes, this is Children in Need after all. It's kind of ironic really though, the shows slogan this year is "do something different". Roll that around in your head for a second as you watch the same old shows perform the exact same kind of performance, not only as last year, but as each other.

Expect to enjoy several soaps singing and dancing, like last year, expect to see lots of short versions of TV shows, wholly written around the concept of Pudsey bear's charity. Likewise enjoy watching more bands you genuinely don't care for doing songs you've not heard of before, and hope to never hear again.

And of course, don't be surprised to hear such tragic stories of kids who deserve your cash in order to buy something or other. I really don't pay attention to these during Red Nose Day, so I honestly have no ideawhy I should bother to do it for Children in Need. Why is Children in Need once every year anyway? We only get Comic Relief once every two years, and it's more athletic companion Sport Relief (seriously, really dumb name that one), every other year alternating.

But what can you do about it really?I mean aside not watch it. Well, that's assuming you can find something worth watching. Usually it's still such a ratings draw (I guess the reason it's on every year), that the other channels don't even bother to compete with it. I wasn't watching it though, as I just spent the last hour watching my girlfriend play Portal instead. Certainly more entertaining. Well, for me anyway, she got a bit unnerved playing it.

Something about a cake or somesuch.
